Diffractive Diffuser Products

The Diffractive Diffuser, a.k.a. Beam Homogenizer, converts any collimated input beam profile into a well-defined beam with homogenized intensity. Any desired shape can be achieved for any wavelength .

A beam homogenizer is very useful in many applications requiring a well-defined beam shape with a randomly-diffused intensity profile.

The output of the diffractive diffuser will depend on the input beam profile:
A multi-mode laser beam actually has an advantage when used with a beam homogenizer, as their degraded coherence will reduce the visibility of speckles and therefore create a more uniform intensity profile than with single mode laser.

Typical applications of beam homogenizers (diffractive diffusers) include: laser beam spot shaping, laser material processing such as ablation, derailing, marking, scribing and welding. Medical/aesthetic laser treatment, beam shaping for Excimer lasers and hot spot reduction. What are diffractive beam shaping  diffusers?

 

Diffractive beam shaping diffusers are  optical components that transform any input laser beam into a flat top spot. They can provide any desired shape with sharp edges, and are designed to operate at a certain narrow band around their design wavelength .

Beam shaping diffusers are used in  many laser applications in laser material processing, including welding, laser surface treatment, laser annealing, laser cleaning and laser aesthetic skin treatments such as tattoo and blemish removal .

How do diffractive diffusers work?

 

Holo/Or diffractive beam shaping diffusers overlay the beam over itself multiple times , scrambling the phase and creating a flat top intensity envelope with any desired shape. Since the operate in a manner similar to a multi spot diffractive beam splitter, they are not sensitive to input centration, laser quality or other parameters. This diffusion mechanism scrambles the phase, but in a random manner, unlike lens array type diffusers, so it has no order artifacts  (lines/ grids) within the shape.

In this way diffractive diffusers can turn a non-symmetrical input beam with hot spots into a flat, uniform illumination  shape.

WHY DO MANY LASER APPLICATIONS REQUIRE SMOOTH SHAPE LASER BEAMS?

Since they operate by optical diffusion, diffractive diffusers can have speckle within the shaped spot. The intensity of the speckle is determined by the input  laser parameters, specifically the temporal coherence of the laser. For lasers such as multimode fiber lasers and UV excimer, flat top uniformity can be excellent.

Q:What is the advantage of a  diffractive beam shaping diffuser over diffuser?

A: Beam shaping diffusers can shape the light into any desired shape, with flat top intensity envelope or any other desired intensity distribution.  Standard Lambertian diffusers, such as ground glass diffusers, scatter the light into a round spot with gaussian distribution, with no shaping.

Q:Which laser applications use diffractive diffusers?

A: Diffractive diffusers are used in aesthetic-medical applications, including tattoo removal and blemish removal. They are also used in Industrial applications including UV laser processing of flat panels and PCBS, thermal treatment with IR lasers and laser welding.

A: Typically efficiency (energy within the shape)  is >77%  for binary diffusers and >90% for multilevel diffractive diffusers.
